Microsoft Pix Camera Update for iPhone and iPad Adds Prisma-Like Filters
Posted on Saturday, 17 June 2017
Microsoft Pix Camera Update for iPhone and iPad Adds Prisma-Like Filters
Highlights
- Microsoft Pix Camera update is now available for iOS
- Brings Prisma-like artistic filters
- New features include Pix Styles, Pix Paintings
Microsoft says that the new update will "give snapshots stylistic flair reminiscent of masterpiece paintings and artsy photos hanging in the famed galleries of Amsterdam, Paris, and New York." The company says it has introduced these features in collaboration with Microsoft's Asia research lab, and Skype as part of an overhaul designed for iOS.
The update introduces a new feature, called Pix Styles, which is similar to Prisma in that it transforms your images into pictures inspired by popular artistic styles, or adds effects such as making the photo look like its on fire. Microsoft explains that this feature doesn't in fact add filters, but rather transfers textures, pattern, and tones to the photo. Pix Styles is being introduced with 11 styles including Glass, Petals, Bacau, Charcoal, Heart, Fire, Honolulu, Zing, Pop, Glitter, and Ripples, and the company says more will be added in the coming weeks.
Next up is Pix Paintings, which creates a time-lapse of your picture being painted in real time in the style selected. This turns your picture into a GIF-like short clip that can be shared or saved.
"These are meant to be fun features," says Microsoft's Josh Weisberg. "In the past, a lot of our efforts were focused on using AI and deep learning to capture better moments and better image quality. This is more about fun. I want to do something cool and artistic with my photos."
Notably, these new features like Pix Style will not use up your iPhone or iPad's data plan as it does not need access the cloud to run its calculations, and will work directly on your device. Microsoft says this is part of a broader shift to push AI from cloud to devices at the "edge" of the network. This will help save up on data cost and will reduce wait times as well.
The Redmond-giant understands that features like these are popular among Instagrammers and other social media users, and the Microsoft Pix team plans to feature styled pictures regularly with the hashtag #PixStyling on Pix's Instagram page.
The update for Microsoft Pix Camera can be downloaded from the App Store.
Reliance Jio Effect: BSNL Offers 360GB Data With New Rs. 444 Prepaid Pack
Highlights
- BSNL's new STV Rs. 444 offer up to 4GB data per day
- The plan has a validity of 90 days
- STV Rs. 444 only for prepaid customers
Under the new STV Rs. 444, BSNL prepaid subscribers will get 4GB data per day with a validity of 90 days. However, unlike Reliance Jio's 4G network, BSNL is 3G-only, so users will get relatively slower speeds with this pack. On the other hand, the data allowance with this BSNL recharge is much higher than what rivals are offering, and comes to around Rs. 1.23 per GB, against Jio's Rs. 11 per GB for the Rs. 309 pack, and Rs. 9 per GB for the Rs. 509 pack.
BSNL users can purchase the recharge from the official website under the STV section on the recharge page. It is worth pointing out the list of STVs on the BSNL recharge Web page mentions 60 days as the validity period. However, we confirmed with the BSNL customer care team that the validity of the new Rs. 444 STV is indeed 90 days.
Announcing the new STV, BSNL's Director for Consumer Mobility RK Mittal said, "We are committed to provide affordable and efficient services to all segments of our mobile customers. We offer best prices to our customers considering present trend of Indian telecom industry." A BSNL customer representative confirmed that the new STV Rs. 444 is a data-only plan, and there will be no call benefits.
For customers who want free calls, there's the 'Dil Khol Ke Bol' STV Rs. 349 where it offered unlimited voice calls (local and STD) alongside additional 2GB for a month with a validity of 28 days. BSNL users looking for both voice and data benefits can opt for the 'Nehle Pe Dehla' STV Rs. 395, which offers 3,000 minutes to other BSNL numbers (local/STD) as well as free 1,800 minutes to any other mobile network (local/STD). Under STV Rs. 395, the company also offers 2GB per day data.
Catering to its broadband customers, BSNL offers Rs. 249 broadband plan under which users get up to 300GB data per month. The new plan also offers partial free calls during night time. The plan is valid only for new customers.
Amazon to Face Tough Wal-Mart Test This Back-to-School Season: JPD
An aggressive pricing and marketing strategy, coupled with the fact that Amazon's business has reached maturity in back-to-school sales, will see Wal-Mart winning the online retail tussle this back-to-school season, NPD Chief Analyst Marshal Cohen told Reuters.
"With Wal-Mart's new Jet.com investment, I would suspect that Wal-Mart is going to basically be able to increase the growth rate, probably almost double that of Amazon," Cohen said.
Winning back-to-school, the second-biggest shopping season after the winter holidays, has become extremely important for traditional brick-and-mortar retailers as their store operations continue to lose customers to online shopping.
To close the gap with Amazon, Wal-Mart acquired online wholesale retailer Jet.com for $3 billion in 2016, through which it not only expanded its product assortment and added more than 400,000 customers, but also gained e-commerce know-how.
Cohen said he expects Wal-Mart to grow its online sales between 2 percent and 5 percent.
Jet.com provides Wal-Mart with a broader assortment of products than what a store has, including timely promotions and dynamic pricing, Cohen said.
The world's largest retailer has also started offering free two-day shipping on eligible orders, much like Amazon's Prime subscription program.
Wal-Mart's aggressive efforts to take on Amazon seem to be gaining momentum even as other retailers and department store chains struggle.
Online sales for Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart rose 63 percent in the first quarter of this year, faster than the 29 percent growth during fourth quarter and 20 percent in the third quarter.
Online sales account for about 3 percent of the company's total sales. Wal-Mart expects online sales growth of 20 percent to 30 percent in the second half of the year, and even faster in the next few years.

OnePlus 5 Price in India, Specifications, Release Date, and More: What the Rumour Mill Says
Highlights
- OnePlus 5 global unveiling on June 20, India launch on June 22
- The next OnePlus flagship is likely to come with 8GB of RAM
- It also said to be the most expensive OnePlus smartphone yet
The OnePlus 5
launch is little over a week away, so the company is trying to keep the
hype going for the smartphone with teasers on social media. But thanks
to a flurry of leaks, we already know what to expect from the next
OnePlus flagship. The global unveiling of the smartphone is scheduled
for June 20, while a separate OnePlus 5 India launch will happen on June 22.
The upcoming OnePlus 5 is widely expected to sport dual cameras at the
back, and come with iPhone 7 Plus-like setup which is likely to be the
biggest highlight. Some of the other notable features rumoured include
Snapdragon 835 processor, and 8GB of RAM. Let's look at what we know so
far.
As mentioned earlier, OnePlus 5 is rumoured to be available in two variants: 6GB RAM + 64GB storage, and 8GB RAM + 128GB storage. It is said to run on Android 7.1 Nougat out-of-the-box. The smartphone is said to sport a 23-megapixel rear camera and a 16-megapixel camera at the front for selfies. As the device sports a dual camera setup at the back, how does 23-megapixel sensor fits in the scheme of things is currently unclear.
Other rumoured OnePlus 5 specifications include a front-facing fingerprint sensor, and a camera developed in partnership with DxO. The company also teased a camera sample showing excellent lowlight performance.
The wait for the smartphone is almost over, just stay tuned to Gadgets 360 for more updates ahead of the launch.
OnePlus 5 price in India
The OnePlus 5 price in India for the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage model is said to be Rs. 32,999, while the 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage model is said to cost Rs. 37,999. If these turn out to be the actual prices, the next flagship will be the most expensive OnePlus smartphone yet. Corroborating the higher price tag, a previous leak also suggested European pricing for the OnePlus 5 which is likely to be EUR 550 (roughly Rs. 39,990). To refresh, the OnePlus 3T was launched last year in India at Rs. 29,999 for the 64GB variant, and Rs. 34,999 for the 128GB variant. For availability, Amazon India source code has already revealed that the OnePlus 5 will be exclusive to the e-commerce website, and will go on sale the same day as India launch.OnePlus 5 RAM and other specs
Coming to OnePlus 5 specifications, the smartphone is confirmed to feature the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, with clock speed of 2.35GHz. While both OnePlus and Qualcomm had earlier said it will be the first smartphone in India with Snapdragon 835, Sony has already beaten the Chinese brand to the punch with the India launch of its Xperia XZ Premium. Other rumoured OnePlus 5 specifications include a front-facing fingerprint sensor, and a camera developed in partnership with DxO. The company also teased a camera sample showing excellent lowlight performance.
OnePlus 5 design
There has been a lot of talk around the design of the new OnePlus 5 but most turned out to be false after the company gave everyone a glimpse of the phone in an official teaser recently. From the back, the smartphone looks like iPhone 7 Plus, with the dual rear camera setup to boot. Unlike rumours that claimed vertical dual-rear camera setup, the OnePlus 5 is confirmed to sport horizontally placed sensors at the back. The phone is also likely to sport a slim profile, and is said to be "slimmest flagship smartphone" from the company. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau on Weibo had teased that the OnePlus 5 will be the slimmest flagship smartphone yet though it wasn't clear whether he meant the slimmest among all the flagship smartphones out there or the slimmest among the OnePlus flagships. The wait for the smartphone is almost over, just stay tuned to Gadgets 360 for more updates ahead of the launch.

4000mAhAhead of OnePlus 5 Launch, OnePlus 3T Goes Out of Stock in US and Europe
Highlights
- The smartphone was discontinued by the company last month
- OnePlus 5 will be launched globally on June 20
- OnePlus 3T will be available in India till later this year
Just last month, OnePlus announced the global discontinuation company's current flagship smartphone - OnePlus 3T.
Now, OnePlus 3T has gone out of stock in the US as well as Europe
(barring the UK) already. Notably, the smartphone is still available in
India and will be available for purchase till later this year, as per an
official statement
given by the company earlier. OnePlus 3T is no longer available for
purchase on the company's official website in the aforementioned
regions. However, the smartphone is still available in the UK via O2.
As mentioned earlier, the OnePlus 3T continues to be available for purchase in India. Last month OnePlus had told Gadgets 360: "The OnePlus 3T (both 64GB and 128GB variants) will continue to be available for purchase in India until later this year. OnePlus products and accessories are available through all three official sales channels, including oneplusstore.in, Amazon.in and the OnePlus Experience Store in Bengaluru."
While we are nearing the launch of the company's upcoming OnePlus 5 flagship, which will be unveiled on June 20, it seems like users will no longer have the option to purchase OnePlus 3T in several regions around the world going forward, as noted first by Gizbot.
As per the leaks, the price for OnePlus 5 has been tipped to start at $479 (roughly Rs. 30,800). In India, the pricing for the smartphone was suggested to start from Rs. 32,999, with the 8GB RAM/128GB storage variant expected to cost Rs. 37,999.
If these are indeed the correct price figures, the higher price of the upcoming smartphone might be the reason why OnePlus is willing to keep the smartphone available in India, considering it is a price-sensitive market. OnePlus 3T is available in India at a price of Rs. 29,999.

Amazon to Buy US Grocer Whole Foods Market for $13.7 Billion
Highlights
- Amazon to acquire Whole Foods Market for $13.7 billion
- Whole Foods Market will continue to operate stores under its brand
- The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2017
Amazon.com Inc. will pay $42 per share for Whole Foods Market Inc., including debt. That marks an 18 percent premium to Whole Foods' closing price on Thursday.
The deal comes a month after Whole Foods announced a board shake-up and cost-cutting plan amid falling sales. The grocery store operator was also under pressure from activist investor Jana Partners.
The grocery chain, known for its organic options, had been facing increased pressure from rivals, including European grocery chain Lidl, which is planning to enter the East Coast market, along with Aldi and Trader Joe's.
Amazon, meanwhile, has been expanding its reach in goods, services, and entertainment.
Whole Foods will keep operating stores under its name and John Mackey will as CEO, with headquarters in Austin, Texas.
The company, founded in 1978, has struggled to differentiate itself as competitors also now offer a plethora of fresh and organic foods, and has said customers may be choosing "good enough" alternatives closer to home. In addition to other natural and organic grocers, it has cited pressure from restaurant chains, meal-delivery companies and traditional supermarkets such as Kroger.
The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2017.

Google Pixel and Pixel XL: Just 1 Million Units Sold in 8 Months?
HIGHLIGHTS
- Google's flagship Pixel smartphones have sold 1 million units
- Its rivals Apple & Samsung have good sales number for their flagships
- The Pixel and Pixel XL were launched last year
Google's flagship Android device has now sold over 1 million units, media reported, saying the figure was reached based on downloads of an application exclusive to the device.
While this is a milestone in the eight-month history of Pixel seen as Google's answer to the Apple iPhone, the number is overshadowed by its competition.
In comparison, Apple sold over 70 million iPhones (which included iPhone 7) in the last quarter of 2016 while Samsung is estimated to have sold 5 million units of Galaxy S8 in the first month of its release.
According to Arstechnica, Google doesn't release sales data but the installs of the device-exclusive "Pixel Launcher" app has just passed the 1 million mark. The data includes pre-installed apps on new Pixel phones and doesn't count installs on third-party devices and so can accurately estimate the number of Pixel phones sold, the report said.
Launched last year, Pixel is the first smartphone that works as an intelligent personal assistant and knowledge navigator. The 5-inch smartphone is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset, 4GB of RAM and runs on Android Nougat 7.0 operating system. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, with two cores clocked at 1.6GHz, and two cores clocked at 2.15GHz, coupled with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. The smartphone sports 12.3-megapixel rear camera with a Sony IMX378 sensor, PDAF, a large f/2.0 aperture and 1.55-micron pixels. On the front, it sports an 8-megapixel camera with a Sony IMX179 sensor, an f/2.4 aperture and 1.4-micron pixels.
The device also has Pixel Imprint - a fingerprint scanner on the back of the smartphone for quick access to all apps, texts and e-mails.
Elon Musk Says Tesla in Talks With Indian Government to Reduce Import Duty
HIGHLIGHTS
- Tesla is in discussion with Indian govt seeking relief on import duties
- Last year in April, Tesla had stated to enter India with Model 3
- India imposes 60% customs duty on completely-built electric car import
The US-based electric car major Tesla is in discussion with Indian government seeking relief on import duties till a local factory is built here, according to the company's Chief Executive Elon Musk.
Earlier this year, Musk had stated that he was hoping for Tesla to enter India this summer with its products, which has so far not materialised.
"In discussion with the government of India requesting temporary relief on import penalties/restrictions until a local factory is built," Musk said in a tweet.
At present, India imposes 60 percent customs duty on import of completely-built electric cars priced less than $40,000 (roughly Rs. 25.8 lakhs). If the electric car is assembled in India, the customs duty on the completely knocked down units is 10 percent.
If the value of the imported car is more than $40,000 the customs duty is 100 percent.
Replying to Musk's tweet, Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar asked if there was an option to import some right hand drive Model X in India and indicated that, if so he would pay full duties.
Last year in April, Tesla had stated that it planned to enter India with its Model 3 in 2017 while it began global rollout of the vehicle in late 2016.
Model 3 is Tesla's most affordable car yet and achieves 215 miles of range per charge while starting at $35,000 before incentives. The company's other models include Model S and Model X.
Musk has been showing increasing interest in the country of late and had earlier this month tweeted about India's commitment to sell only electric cars by 2030.
"It is already the largest market for solar power," he had tweeted.
Mahindra group Chairman Anand Mahindra responded to Musk's tweet in a lighter vein saying, "time you got out here Elon. You don't want to leave that whole market to Mahindra do you?? The more the merrier- and greener..!"

Plex App for Android Will Now Let You Play Files Stored on Your Phone
HIGHLIGHTS
- Latest Plex update will play mostly any video file on Android
- You won’t need a third party app to play videos
- App will fetch metadata for your media file
Popular media server Plex has just brought a major update to its app for Android. You can now open and play pretty much any video file stored on your Android device or SD card, and you no longer have to play it through a third-party player. The company says that with this update, you will no longer face the problem of opening video files stored locally.
The latest update for Android will now let you play local video files including .MP4s, .MKVs, .AVIs, .WMVs, and .WMDs, among other formats, within the app. The Plex app for Android already lets you scheduled live TV recordings, offering a DVR-like function, and with this new update, the app has a stronger case to take on apps like VLC.
The ability to open practically any video format will come in handy as users may sometimes find themselves downloading files from torrent sites that can be difficult to play on mobile. In addition to locally stored files, the latest update also lets you open files stored in third-party apps like Dropbox. You can also open video files from the Web browser, Downloads app, or a file explorer app.
Notably, the Plex app will also automatically fetch metadata for your media file. If the file is recognised, the title, artwork will show. It is able to do this by matching the videos based on the filename and other details. But sometimes there could be an error in getting the right details for the video. In that case, you can tap on the three dot icon below the video and select the 'Unmatch' option to hide the metadata.
Most of the playback controls will be available when playing a local file, like pausing, skipping or stopping the tracks. The update (v6.0) is rolling out to Android phones and tablets and can be downloaded via Google Play, and will come soon to the Amazon App Store.
