Microsoft Modern Keyboard With 'Hidden' Fingerprint Scanner Launched

Microsoft on Thursday silently unveiled a new keyboard, called the Microsoft Modern Keyboard. Priced at Rs. $129.99 (roughly Rs. 8,500), the new Modern Keyboard is listed as "coming soon" on the company's US website with no word when the accessory will go on sale. The highlight of the keyboard is that it comes with a fingerprint scanner that just looks like any other key on the keyboard.
"Our vision was to blend the Fingerprint reader into a keyboard, so it would appear to be any other key. We iterated relentlessly to improve each layer, making sure they came together to create a flawless typing experience that felt like any other key," Microsoft says on the product page of the Modern Keyboard.
The keyboard comes with aluminium frame and Microsoft claims it sports "highest quality" and is "virtually indestructible."

The Modern Keyboard will allow Windows 10 users to enable Windows Hello fingerprint authentication on their devices. The fingerprint scanner has been placed on the second Windows key on the right side of the keyboard, and can be used for signing in to the system or any website using Windows Hello.
The Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint Scanner will work will Windows 8 and above devices, macOS 10.10.5 and above devices, Android 4.2 and above, and iOS 8 and iOS 9. Users need to make sure that the device should support Bluetooth 4.0 or higher for the Microsoft Modern Keyboard to work. Microsoft will also let users choose between using the Modern Keyboard with wireless/ wired interface.
It comes with dimensions 420.9x112.6x19.3mm and weighs roughly 420 grams. The wireless Microsoft Modern Keyboard runs on two AAA alkaline rechargeable batteries. Microsoft claims a battery life of up to 2 months on full charge. The Redmond giant will be offering one-year limited warranty on the keyboard.

NetApp Launches Its First Startup Accelerator in Bengaluru

US-based storage and data management company NetApp on Wednesday announced the launch of the NetApp Excellerator programme in Bengaluru, the company's first startup nurturing initiative in the country.

The programme was launched at the new 15-acre NetApp campus in Bengaluru in the presence of IT expert Mohandas Pai, partners, venture capitalists, startups and customers.

"The tech industry is going through a transformational shift with data right at the centre. Through the NetApp Excellerator programme, we would like to encourage and support start-ups and provide them with an opportunity to graduate to their next phase of growth," said Deepak Visweswaraiah, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, NetApp India, in a statement.

The applications for the four-month programme are now open for startups. NetApp will provide an equity-free grant of $15,000 (roughly Rs. 9.6 lakhs) to the startups after the completion of the programme.

Selected startups will receive technology and business mentorship as well as access to markets and investors to realise the full potential of their ideas and products in the global marketplace.

Applications are invited from startups working in the areas related to IoT, cloud, big data and analytics, machine learning, virtualisation, data security, storage and data management, and other adjacent areas.

The NetApp Excellerator program will provide startups with access to collaboration and productivity tools, co-working space out of the company's global centre of excellence in Bengaluru as well as networking opportunities with potential investors, partners and customers.

Selected startups will have access to NetApp platforms and technologies, tools, co-working space, HR, marketing, legal and tech support.

"Through the NetApp Excellerator programme, we seek to engage with promising entrepreneurs contributing to diverse set of tech areas," added Ajeya Motaganahalli, Director, NetApp India.

Paytm Now Lets You Pay Traffic Challans Online

In a new development, digital payment service Paytm has now introduced another service on its platform easing every day payment hassles. The platform now has an option to pay traffic challans online. This service is now live in Mumbai, Pune and Vijayawada, and will be expanded to other cities soon.

This option is currently not reflecting on the app for now in the mentioned cities, but is live on the website. If you own a vehicle, you can now use the option ‘Traffic Challan’ to pay for challans obtained for violating any kind of traffic rules. This includes everything from jumping a red light, over-speeding, not wearing a helmet, ignoring traffic signs, driving without a valid licence and so on.

Once the challan is generated against your vehicle’s registration number, log into Paytm, enter the city name, challan/ vehicle number, and choose your payment method. After verification, you can then pay for the challan online, and this will generate a digital invoice and the customer’s surrendered documents will be dispatched via postal services by the respective police department.

Speaking on the announcement, Kiran Vasireddy, Snr. Vice President - Paytm said in a statement, “Traffic challan payments in India largely happen at select counters and in cash. We are glad to partner with the state traffic police departments to enable challan payments on the go. This is a new stride in our vision to add convenience to every payment use-case in the country.”

This furthers the government’s initiative to making payments cashless, and eradicates the hassle of going to the police department for paying the challan. Plus, the documents are delivered at home, easing the otherwise cumbersome process for vehicle owners and the police.
