HMD Global on Tuesday unveiled the much-awaited Nokia 6, Nokia 5, and Nokia 3 Android phones in India. The three smartphones mark the re-entry of the Nokia smartphones in the country, and HMD Global has announced that all Nokia phones sold in India will be manufactured domestically. Notably, the company is selling Nokia 3 and Nokia 5 offline, while the Nokia 6 will be sold exclusively via Amazon India. All three Nokia smartphones are 4G VoLTE-enabled, and run stock Android Nougat software, with regular updates promised by HMD Global.

Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 prices in India, release dates

The Nokia 6 price in India is Rs. 14,999, and those who buy the smartphone using Amazon Pay balance will get a Rs. 1,000 discount. Registrations for Nokia 6 sale will start on July 14, but the company has not announced when the smartphone will go on sale. On the other hand, the Nokia 5 price in India is Rs. 12,899, and will be available for pre-booking starting July 7 through offline channels. The Nokia 3, cheapest of the three, will be going on sale at a price of Rs. 9,499, and will be available exclusively via offline retail as well from June 16.

Nokia 6 specifications

Nokia 6 is the best-specced smartphone among the three. It features a 5.5-inch full-HD 2.5D screen with Corning Gorilla Glass protection and a fingerprint sensor. The Nokia 6 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat and is powered by Snapdragon 430 SoC coupled with 3GB of RAM. The handset packs 32GB inbuilt storage, and supports microSD cards up to 128GB capacity, and houses a 3000mAh battery.

On the camera front, the Nokia 6 sports a 16-megapixel rear sensor, while the front camera's resolution is 8-megapixel and both come with an f/2.0 aperture. The handset has USB 2.0 port for connectivity, fingerprint sensor in the front, dual stereo speakers and Dolby Atmos audio enhancement.

Nokia 5 specifications

Nokia 5 features a fingerprint scanner and sports a 5.2-inch HD display. It runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat and is powered by the Snapdragon 430 processor coupled with 2GB of RAM. It comes with 16GB inbuilt storage and also supports expandable storage via microSD card (up to 128GB). Nokia 5 packs a 13-megapixel sensor on the back and an 8-megapixel sensor at the front.

The Nokia 5's design is highlighted with a seamless aluminium 6000 series body that curves around the edges for a smooth, rounded shape, which the company says is a "perfect fit for those who need great design, specs at its price." The handset features a fingerprint sensor embedded in the home button. It measures 149.7x72.5x8.05mm and houses a 3000mAh non-removable battery.

Nokia 3 specifications

Lastly, Nokia 3 has been targeted at those who are looking for a premium-looking handset at a budget. It comes with a polycarbonate body and metallic frame on the sides. For specifications, the Nokia 3 has a 5-inch HD display, Android 7.0 Nougat, 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek 6737 SoC. It comes with 16GB of inbuilt storage, which is expandable up to 128GB via microSD card support.

Optics include an 8-megapixel camera on both the front and back. The Nokia 3 packs a 2650mAh battery and measures 143.4x71.4x8.4mm.

"Nokia 3 is special and we strongly believe that a good design and specifications at a budget is something everyone deserves," the company said at launch.

OnePlus 5 to be sold exclusively through Amazon in India from June 22, said to come with 8 GB RAM

The much awaited OnePlus 5 is finally confirmed to launch on June 20, and, following its global launch, the OnePlus 5 will be launched in India on June 22. While that’s still more than two weeks from now, Amazon India has confirmed that it will be selling the OnePlus 5 exclusively from June 22.

Amazon India has setup a dedicated page for the OnePlus 5 which shows the same teaser image used by OnePlus to announce the date of launch. Amazon India has also mentioned that the sale will start at 4.30 pm while re-confirming that the OnePlus 5 will come with Snapdragon 835 under the hood.

There aren’t much details available right now about the OnePlus 5, except that it has Snapdragon 835 SoC under the hood along with a dual camera setup at its back. There have also been rumors of OnePlus 5 coming with different amount of RAM.

Motorola India confirms Android Nougat update for Moto X Play

Last week, we told you that Moto X Play was receiving the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update. Well, that turned out to be a soak test and not the final OTA. However, Motorola has now confirmed that the Nougat update will soon be released for the Moto X Play units in India.

While replying to a user query on Twitter, Motorola India said that “Nougat will come to the Moto X Play soon“. However, the company didn’t reveal any specific date for the release. Well, even though Motorola hasn’t revealed any specific date of release of Nougat for Moto X Play, we expect it to be rolled out by the end of this month or the beginning of next.
Also, it’s worth noting that the Moto X Play was launched around two years ago with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and, Motorola definitely deserves a round of applause for rolling out an Android version update for a two year old phone.
Besides, according to the release notes on Motorola’s website, the Moto X Play will receive the 7.1.1 Nougat update instead of 7.0 which will bring in features like app shortcuts, improved Doze mode, multi-window and more.
Like we said earlier, there’s no specific date of roll out of Nougat for Moto X Play, however, once Motorola reveals the date, we will share it with you.

Monopolies, Arbitrary Prices, and Non-Existent Service: Who's Going to Fix India's Broadband Market?

• Apart from a few areas of big cities, wired broadband is pretty limited
• In many areas, you'll only have a single provider you can utilise
• Lack of competition leads to arbitrary pricing and poor service quality

In India, there are barely a handful of companies that can claim to offer broadband services across the country. In the big cities, you have a few other local players. Some of these, such as ACT Fibrenet have launched gigabit services, and are growing fast. The company’s broadband services are available in 11 cities, with plans to add two more over the next 18 months.
In practice this means that if you're not living in one of the big cities - or even if you're living in one of them but in an area that falls outside the catchment area of most providers - you'll only have one or two options to choose from, at best. There's limited competition, and as a result, prices have not really improved over time, unlike mobile connections where it’s relatively easier to move from one provider to the other.
Cable providers provide the only real alternative
There are some local providers - cable operators who double up as Internet providers. These connections often don't have any FUP limits, and do offer reasonable prices, but in our experience, downtime is not a rare event, and customer complaints usually take a long time to resolve.

We weren't alone in that experience either - we spoke to a number of customers who have used or are using cable operator-provided Internet connections. The responses we got showed how much the experience varies from one provider to the another, and even one locality to the other.
For example, Anuj Katyal, a doctor in Mayur Vihar, switched to the local provider for his apartment complex two years ago, and says that it was the best decision. "I pay half [Rs. 750 per month] of what my neighbour gives to Airtel, I get 20Mbps to his 40Mbps, and zero FUP," says Katyal. "I'm watching Netflix at full quality like it's regular TV and I've never had any issues. The office is just downstairs in the next building, so if something is wrong, I just walk down and come back up to get my support."
Several others however say that downtime of one or two days at a time is not unheard of, something we can attest to as well based on our experience. Also, the speed varies a lot on a daily usage basis, which can degrade experiences like video streaming, or gaming. And speaking of gaming, ping response (or latency) can also vary a lot.
It's a capital intensive business
Today, the status quo is being challenged by companies like Excitel, Spectranet, and ACT, which are offering far better rates, better download limits (or no download limits), and promising fast service. But they're limited in terms of the cities they're available in, and even if they're in your city, there's a good chance that they may not service your neighbourhood just yet.

The reason for this is pretty obvious - the wired broadband business is extremely capital intensive.
ACT earlier told Gadgets 360 that it looks at expansion from one neighbourhood to the next, not one city at a time. "To build in any city, you need a capital commitment of at least Rs. 200 crores," ACT CEO Bala Malladi explained.
A Spectranet executive supported this view, and said, "wireless providers need to put up a tower and you're done. In our case, you have to dig up and lay cable everywhere, then set up base stations, and then get the wire directly into the user's house as well."
"It's extremely expensive, and time consuming," he continued. "That's why not too many people can get into this space, but there's a new wave of growth coming because with 4K video, and video consumption going up, there's more need for wired connections."
Reliance Jio could be a game changer
The Reliance Jio impact on the telecom market has been very evident - every service provider had to drop prices, offer more and more data, and offer free calling. The company is launching broadband services next, and is said to be providing 100GB data at 100Mbps for free as it’s still testing the service. The monthly rental isn't known yet, but expect it to be highly competitive, if the Jio 4G rates are any indication.

The Jio preview already seems to have had an impact in the market. We've seen broadband providers offerings more data at the same price, and prices dropping across the board already. Even so, things are likely to change a lot faster once Reliance Jio gets out of the testing phase.
That's because Reliance is one of the few companies in India that has the financial muscle to take on the problem of quick expansion for wired broadband. Companies like ACT and Spectranet grow slowly one neighbourhood at a time because of the cost involved. Reliance would be able to make its presence felt at a national level, and that's going to have a direct impact on the competition - in fact, it's going to create a scenario where there actually is competition.
Whether or not you're a fan of Jio's customer service - and that's one area where some people do have doubts - it has the potential to really shake up the wired broadband market in India, to the benefit of the customers.
